ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Police have released a composite sketch of one of two men connected to an attempted rape at a popular park that happened in the middle of the day.
The attack happened around 5 p.m. on Thursday at Ormond Memorial Gardens park at 78 East Granada Boulevard in Ormond Beach.
The park is so densely wooded, passersby from the street can't see anything that might be going on inside the park and it happened right after most workers at the museum would have already left for the day.
"From my room, I saw police lights. So me and my boyfriend took a walk and we actually walked in the entrance right over there and the cop followed us and said we can't be in there," said Danielle Monahan, who said police told her a woman was attacked in her neighborhood park. "I guess beat her up pretty bad. It's a shock to me. I come in here all the time."
Police said two men walked into the park, one walked off and appeared to know the nooks and crannies of the park very well.
The other, whose image was released via a composite sketch, began a conversation with the victim. Police said he followed the victim around the park, until he grabbed her from behind, held a knife to her throat and started talking in a sexual tone.
The victim fought him off, managed to run to nearby Halifax Drive and flag down a car for help.
Despite a K-9 and helicopter search, both men escaped.
With an attacker still loose, women said they're taking steps to stay safe, but they're not going to stop coming to their favorite park.
"I have to walk through here to get to the bus stop, but my cousin and her friend walk with me," said Monahan.
The man who tried to assault the victim was described as Caucasian, but sun-tanned, aged 30 to 40, approximately 5 feet 8 to 10 inches tall with dark to medium brown straight, short hair. He has brown eyes and was last seen wearing a darker color T-shirt, dark blue jean shorts (knee length), and cheap looking flip flops with black straps and white soles, police said.
