Brandy Bookamer was walking with 6-year-old daughter when dogs attacked

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A woman was mauled by a pack of pit bulls and seriously injured Sunday night in Flagler County while walking with her 6-year-old daughter, according to sheriff's officials.

Flagler County deputies said Brandi Bookamer, 27, suffered numerous puncture wounds and lacerations in the attack, which occurred near her home on Holly Lane in Daytona North around 8 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies said Bookamer protected her daughter from the five dogs and told her to run home, saving the girl from injury.

Bookamer was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for treatment.  Her aunt, Elizabeth Clark, said Bookamer needed stitches on her arms, legs and buttocks.

Deputies located the dogs in the 6200 block of Mahogany Boulevard and
notified Animal Control officials, who took possession of the animals. The dogs are at the SCPA facility in Palm Coast, according to deputies.

Local 6 spoke to the owner of the dogs, who said his two puppies and their mother probably escaped out of a hole in the fence on the backside of his property and came around to the front. Donny Hays said he first learned about the incident this morning from his neighbors and said he couldn't believe it.

"My dogs mind me when I tell them to go in the yard and lay down, they do. When I say go on the porch and lay down, they do. I don't understand why this happened," Hays said.

Two other dogs stayed behind the fence as the attack happened. Hays said he wasn't home at the time of the attack and he doesn't have homeowners insurance so he's not sure what the next step is.

"I apologized to the family and the girl that got bit up. I feel bad for them. I don't know what to do," Hays said.

Bookamer's daughter is now staying with her grandparents.

"Her daughter is doing alright, we got her back to school," said Bookamer's uncle, Don Clark.

Bookamer's aunt said Bookamer got stitches on a large area of her arms and legs but is in good condition and is expected to be out of the hospital in a couple of days.
