NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - A pilot was killed Wednesday in a plane crash in New Smyrna Beach, according to fire officials.

Volusia County deputies said Paul Rooy, age 56, of Daytona Beach, took off in his twin engine Cessna 337 from the airport at around 1 p.m. when it crashed ion Tumblin Drive, just west of the athletic fields at New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex. The tower manager at the airport called in the crash at 1:13 p.m., according to deputies.

The plane broke apart upon impact, killing Rooy, deputies said. No one else was on board, and no one on the ground was injured.

Video from Sky 6 showed debris from the plane across a field and a tree snapped in half.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will be called in to investigate the cause of the crash.
