Poker ride and fire truck pull fundraiser Saturday

Fire chiefs from all over the state are set to attend

SANFORD, Fla. – Hundreds of firefighters from all over Florida will descend on The Barn in Sanford for a fire truck pull to help out a fellow rescuer who was critically injured trying to save a woman stabbed by her husband at a Seminole County restaurant.

Caroline Dorton, an Orange City firefighter-paramedic, was off duty at a Lake Mary restaurant when she rushed to the aid of Cherica Brown. Cherica Brown's estranged husband stabbed her in the parking lot, but later returned and plowed his car into Dorton and an unidentified nurse who tried to help. The husband, Henry Brown, would go on to kill their two children and himself in a vehicle on Interstate 4.

Now, Dorton is back at home and beginning to walk again, but according to those close to her she will have a lengthy recovery.

On Saturday, the Orange City Police Department and Fire Department will host a poker run and then a pumper pull to help Dorton and her family grapple with medical bills and everyday expenses.

At 11 a.m., riders will knock their kickstands back at Critters Pub, 2946 Howland Blvd., in Deltona. The entry fee is $10 per vehicle and $5 per passenger. Call 386-561-8682 for more info. After five stops, the run converges with the fire truck pull at The Barn at 3 p.m.

At least 35 teams of 10 firefighters and others will compete. Florida Hospital will land their chopper there and fire chiefs all over the state are set to sit on the ledge in the dunk tank, among other fun family events.

The Barn is at 1200 S. French Ave. Call 407-947-8410 for more information.
