DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Daytona Beach police have charged a man with child abuse after they say he hit a 22-month-old in the head.

Police said Robert Williams, 49, was at the house on Whitney Street when the 22-month-old girl and her father, who isn't being identified, came into the home to get out of the rain. According to the report, the father walked out of the house and moments later, heard a commotion inside of the house.

The father saw his daughter holding her head and said Williams had hit the child for an unknown reason, according to the report. The father then began to beat up Williams, then gave the child to a neighbor and ran away, police said.

Police said the father has a open warrant and it's believed that's why he fled. Police found Williams walking down the street with blood on him.

Williams gave no reason for hitting the child he did state that the blood on him was "the blood of Jesus." The child's injuries aren't life threatening.
