ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Altamonte Springs police say they are searching for a gunman who shot a man in the head after they decided to get together following a conversation online.
Jermaine Anthony Peacock, 22, was shot around 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Oaks of Spring Valley apartment complex at Wymore Road and Spanish Trace Drive, just west of Interstate 4.
Police said after they tracked the suspect to nearby apartments, their trail went cold. The duo was supposed to meet up for a date after meeting online, according to investigators.
Detectives asked if the victim knew where his friend was and he responded, "He's not my friend anymore. He shot me."
Neighbors describe the apartment complex as quiet and safe. They said they were stunned that bullets would go flying through the parking lot.
"I don't feel safe," said neighbor Theresa Keels. "When I get home, I'm going to be scared to get out of my car because you don't know who is going to walk up to you and put a gun to your head."
Altamonte Springs police said Peacock and the suspect had met online.
"These two individuals had not met in person, but had spoke," said Officer Robert Pelton. "They were going to meet tonight and go out. They were walking to the man's car and a struggle ensued, shots were fired and then we were called."
When police arrived, they said they found Peacock with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his head. Police said it appeared a bullet grazed his head.
Peacock was taken to a hospital.
A detailed description of the gunman was not released by police.
