TITUSVILLE, Fla. - A 52-year-old homeless man lost an eye and suffered skull fractures when he was attacked while sleeping by a hammer-wielding man, Titusville police said.

John Paul Angelillo, 33, was arrested Friday morning on a charge of attempted murder.

According to Titusville police, two Brevard County sheriff's deputies discovered Angelillo around 6:40 a.m. in the 3100 block of Garden Street and then found the victim.

Police said the victim had been involved in a verbal altercation with Angelillo in the past and Angelillo attacked the 52-year-old Friday morning while the victim was sleeping.

The victim was beaten, kicked and struck multiple times with a hammer and suffered multiple facial and skull fractures and the loss of an eye, police said.  He also suffered injuries to his ribs and body and possible broken bones in his arm, according to police.

The victim was airlifted to a hospital and was listed in critical condition.
