Police: Teens stole Florida school bus, went on joy ride

Bus traveled 180 miles, Polk school officials say

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Three Central Florida teens stole a school bus, picked up other students and went on a 180-mile joy ride, according to officials.

Police say the teens took the bus Sunday night after finding it parked at Lake Wales High School with the keys inside. The teens face charges of grand theft auto and trespassing on school property.

The incident was captured on the bus's video system.

The investigation began Tuesday when a routine inspection of the bus showed gas was missing and 180 extra miles were registered on the odometer since the driver parked it.

Police say the teens covered three of four cameras on the bus. The images of two teens were captured and the name of the third was mentioned.  High school staff members identified them, police say.
