LAKE WALES, Fla. - A Central Florida woman chained her 7-year-old son to a bed while he was sleeping and stabbed him repeatedly in the chest, according to police.

Maisa Alvarez, 42, of Lake Wales, was arrested Tuesday on charges of attempted murder and aggravated child abuse.

The boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando.  Police said he was in stable condition, and none of the stab wounds was life-threatening.

According to Lake Wales police, officers received a report of a stabbing around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday and discovered the attack.

Police said the boy awoke to his mother chaining his hands together, and he tried to block the stabbings with his arms, which were also wounded.

Lake Wales police said the motive for the attack is unknown.

An investigation is ongoing.
