Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana said Wednesday that Democrats need to "urinate or get off the pot" when it comes to impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.

Kennedy, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, criticized Democratic House leadership and said, "If they're going to want to impeach the President, go impeach him. Saddle up and ride. Grow some guts. But stop the petty harassment."

"Because you know what's going to happen? Some long-term damage is going to happen," Kennedy said, saying the fight is going to end up in court, "but court's a zero-sum game."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat who has pushed her caucus away from starting impeachment proceedings, is facing pressure from within her own leadership ranks to take a more aggressive strategy, CNN previously reported.

When asked about Trump walking out of an infrastructure meeting with Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday, Kennedy said "infrastructure wasn't going to happen anyway until we agree, can agree, on how to pay for it."

Trump abruptly ended the second round of infrastructure talks at the White House, and told reporters that he had told Pelosi and Schumer he could not work with them until their investigations into him were over.

Infrastructure, a priority for both the President and Democrats, could be a rare area of bipartisan cooperation but the breakdown in talks on Wednesday signals compromise is currently out of reach.

When asked if Kennedy fears the President can't legislate with Democrats if they are investigating him, the Louisiana Republican said, "We're not legislating ... anyway," and that "the House hasn't done anything except try to harass the President and pass bills that they know don't have a hope in hell of passing the United States Senate."

"This idea that the President has somehow blown up the serious legislating by the United States Congress -- if you believe that, you just parachuted in from another planet," Kennedy said. "We're almost six months into this Congress and we haven't done a thing except sit on our ice cold lazy butts."
