Public hearing set for Brevard County school closures

In a controversial decision that passed with a split vote, the Brevard School Board decided Tuesday to have a public hearing next month on closing the four schools originally recommended, Local 6 news partner Florida Today reports.

Gardendale Elementary on Merritt Island, Sea Park Elementary in Satellite Beach, South Lake Elementary in Titusville and Clearlake Middle in Cocoa will be considered for closure on Jan. 22.

Tuesday's decision effectively took a parent-suggested alternative — to shutter Pinewood Elementary in Mims instead of South Lake — off the table.

Board Members Amy Kneessy and Michael Krupp opposed the motion.

With the school district facing a $30 million budget deficit, Kneessy said she first wanted to see a list of other proposed cuts, which will be announced on the school district's website a week from today, before moving forward toward the school closures. In addition, she expressed concern about the cost of converting Cocoa High to a junior/senior school in order to accommodate students from Clearlake, if it is closed.

The board will cast its deciding vote after the public hearing that night.

Krupp said he opposed closing any school in North Brevard. He had wanted to take both proposals — closing South Lake and Pinewood — off the table.

The school district closed Riverview Elementary, another Titusville school, this past year.
