BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – More rain is set to fall over the weekend. It's not good news for people living along the swollen St. Johns River and already in flooded neighborhoods.
"It's devastating. I don't know how to describe it. It's kind of a nightmare," Ken Hummell said.
Hummell said they moved into a house the week before Hurricane Irma and it wasn't long before the whole house was underwater. The water flowed right through the living room and all the bedrooms, ruining furniture and causing mold to grow in the walls.
"After the hurricane, we used a canoe, a canoe to my backyard, man, and came in through my back door," Hummell said.
Now, nearly a month later, the water in front of his house has barely gone down. Hummell said the street can't handle any more rain.
"I'm hoping the rain we get this weekend, the hurricane or whatever is in the gulf, doesn't affect us much because this is from Sunday," he said.
"We can't take more rain, because as you can see, it just not going down. The water has no place to go," resident George Frye said.
Frye said some of his neighbors were forced to move out.
"They can't live in their houses. They're flooded out. It's just not a good situation," Frye said.
"I'm terrified driving through this every day to go to work because I don't know what's underneath it. The water is so black, you can't see anything," resident Regina Knight said.
Neighbors told News 6 they didn't buy flood insurance because it wasn't required for the area since the county lifted the flooding restrictions, claiming their homes would be safe. Unfortunately, the area still floods.
