2 injured in Melbourne shooting, police say

Police: Road shut down during investigation

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A road in Melbourne was shut down Friday afternoon after gunfire was reported, police said.

Melbourne police said officers received a call around 2:30 p.m. about shots being fired in front of the U-Mart on University Boulevard.

Police said one person was in critical condition and another was stable following the shooting.

"Two men were sitting in a black vehicle and we believe four men approached on foot and fired at them," said Melbourne Police Department Lt. Cheryl Trainer.

Sky 6 flew over the scene shortly after the shooting.

"When things like this happen, the safest thing we can do is let us know what's going on," Trainer said. "There are children and elderly out here and people just enjoying their day. The sooner we find out more information, the better we will be to get the shooters off the street."

University Boulevard was shut down in both directions from Grant Street to Leonard Weaver Boulevard as the shooting was being investigated, police said. All westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of traffic reopened around 5:20 p.m. Police said the area was expected to be cleared by 6 p.m.
