Samples from New Smyrna, Ormond Beach test negative for red tide

More testing ordered

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Test results from Volusia County water samples taken earlier this week show that red tide was not present, county officials said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission tested samples collected on Tuesday from Hiles Boulevard and Crawford Road in New Smyrna Beach and Granada Boulevard in Ormond Beach to see if the toxic algae had spread to the area. The results, which came in on Thursday, showed that it had not.

Earlier samples from Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park in Daytona Beach did test positive for extremely low levels of the Karenia brevis microorganism responsible for the red tide outbreak. The concentration was not high enough to cause respiratory problems or any other health issues, officials said.

Water testing will continue in the area and the county plans to post signs warning of the potential side effects of red tide exposure.
