Sheriff's Office sends condolences following deadly crash

FHP: Deputy hits van; Driver killed

Headline Goes Here

The marks on State Road 100 near West Black Road are very telling, but state troopers hope video from a bus driving by at the time of the crash will them more about what led up to it. Meanwhile, the Flagler county Sheriff's Office is speaking out.

"It's a tragic situation," said Flagler County Undersheriff Rick Staly.

When tragedy hits, deputies are usually the ones there to support, but in this case, they are caught right in the middle.

"It's a sad day for everyone, not only for that family, but for our agency because that's not what we do," said Staly.

Troopers say Flagler deputy Chris Crego hit the back of a van while rushing to a call. The van flipped over. Eduardo Pacheco, 64, of Palm Coast, was killed in the crash.

The 31-year-old deputy has been with the department for about a year and a half.

The department's undersheriff tells Local 6, Crego has no prior problems.

If you ask the victim's neighbor, he'll tell you the deputy should have been more responsible.

David Fields said, "Rushing to another situation, I mean, this is what they're trained for. This is the police, we're talking about.  They should know all the situations."

Staly said, "You could be the very first one to arrive and render aid so those are the kind of things that are going through their mind as their trying to get there."

The deputy would never make it there, troopers now wait on video to help them find out exactly why.

While crews have taken away the cars and cleared the scene,  the investigation could take up to 2 months and then the Flagler County Sheriff's Office will have its own investigation.

A Flagler County school bus, carrying a driver, aide and 15-year-old special needs student who attends Indian Trails Middle School, was heading eastbound on S.R. 100 and was struck by debris from the crash, the FHP said.  The bus windshield was shattered, but no one was injured, the FHP said.
