LEESBURG, Fla. – Lockdowns at several Lake County schools have been lifted after a shooting Friday morning near Carver Middle School.

Carver Middle and Leesburg High were placed on a full lockdown, meaning no one was allowed on or off campus. Rhymes Early Learning, Beverly Shores Elementary, Leesburg Elementary and Oak Park Middle schools were placed on modified lockdown.

The shooting was reported at 7:46 a.m. Friday at the Family Discount Mart on Griffin Road, police said.

According to Leesburg police, two men got into an argument in the parking lot of the store, and one of them opened fire. The shooting victim, who was struck several times, fled the scene in a car, police said.

"This was not a random incident or a random act of violence," Lt. Scott Mack, with the Leesburg Police Department, said. "It appeared it was two individuals that knew one another."

An officer heading to the scene was flagged down by the victim, who was taken to a trauma center, police said. His condition is not known.

The shooter ran from the store and has not been found. Police said they have identified Shane Justin Atterbury, 37, as a suspect and plan to charge him with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and carrying a concealed firearm.

Atterbury's last known address was on Park Circle in Leesburg, police said.

Buses headed to Carver Middle were rerouted to the bus storage lot off Center Street, where parents were able to pick up their children.

"I did not know what was going on," sixth grader Kevin Rubio, who was on one of the buses, said.

News 6 was there as Rubio's mother picked him up at the safe location.

Carver Middle School officials said anyone who was on campus before the lockdown was issued was placed in a safe location.

"It was a security precaution but nothing occurred on school grounds and we had no reason to believe the shooter was ever on school grounds," Mack said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Leesburg Police Department or Central Florida Crimeline at 1-800-423-8477.
