Space Coast Harley-Davidson, neighbors clash over noise at charity events

Some say concerts vibrate homes, smoke reaches yards

PALM BAY, Fla. – Space Coast Harley-Davidson near Palm Bay Road and Interstate 95 hosts hundreds of charity events each year, and a few people living near the dealership say the concerts are too noisy.

Oakview Estates residents Lynn Lehr, Kathy Brotherton and Suzie Staples said the music is so loud it vibrates windows.

"It's so stressful to live like this," Lehr said. "I'm contemplating getting the glass double-paned windows to try and block out some of the sound."

"It's been this way since last year that they've had constant events pretty much every weekend," Staples said.

City ordinance allows the events, in the name of charity, and Space Coast Harley-Davidson is an award-winning host.

However, the event coordinator said they are making changes.

He said all events on weekdays are not noisy and bands playing on weekends are now playing in the afternoon, not at night.

The store said it's also moving some stages and speakers and it might move all motor sports attractions to a dirt track to stop tire screeching.

"It comes in our home and we don't have a choice and it's disgusting. It smells horrible," Lehr said.

Lehr said the noise also bothers an injured peacock for which she's caring.

"He shivers a little bit and he pants a lot," Lehr said of the peacock she named Fancy.

Staples said the neighbors want the city to change the ordinance.

"It's just really getting terrible," she said.

Councilman Jeff Bailey said he's open to tweaking the law to make everyone happy.

Space Coast Harley-Davidson has 500 charities booked for future events. The store said 100 percent of the proceeds go to the charities.

"We're not asking for them to stop the events. We are asking for them to turn the bass down," Staples said.

Lehr said she's meeting next week with the city attorney to talk more about the ordinance. Stick with News 6 and ClickOrlando.com for updates to this story.
