Coast Guard rescues sickened crew from ship off Cape

19 of 21 crew members sickened by food poisoning, Coast Guard says

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The Coast Guard rescued 19 crew members aboard a cargo ship who were sickened by food poisoning off the coast of Cape Canaveral.

The captain of the 584-foot South Korean-flagged cargo ship JS Comet, which was anchored 3 miles off the coast of Cape Canaveral, called Tuesday morning seeking help for 19 of the 21 crew members on board, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard sent aircrews and medical personnel to transport the ill crew members to be treated for their symptoms.

The Coast Guard will bring in a replacement crew to man the ship until the sickened workers can return to work.

The rescue comes as Central Florida begins to feel the effects of Tropical Storm Arthur.
