Students cope after classmates killed, injured in Port Orange family shooting

David Mohney shot his 3 children, self, police say

PORT ORANGE, Fla. – Students returned to class Tuesday for the first time since a father shot his three children and himself inside his Port Orange home.

Officials with Volusia County Schools said crisis counselors would be available at Spruce Creek High School, Creekside Middle School and Cypress Creek Elementary School, where the children attended class.  Volusia schools were closed to students Monday because of a scheduled teacher work day.

The school district also said positive things were planned at each school to help students cope.

Autopsies confirmed that David Mohney, 52, and his children died from gunshots fired by Mohney.  The autopsy results released Monday show that all three deaths were the result of shots fired from a 9 mm handgun.

Deputies said David Mohney killed his 11-year-old son, David, and his 14-year-old daughter, Savanna, last Friday following an argument with his wife.

The shootings took place in their home in the Spruce Creek Farms neighborhood.
David Mohney and his wife, Cynthia, were in the middle of a bitter divorce.

Cynthia Mohney fled the house before the shootings, and another daughter, Lauren, also was shot.  Authorities say Lauren Mohney is in a medically-induced coma and was listed in stable condition.
