SWAT standoff ends after wanted man barricades in Orlando home

Homes near standoff site evacuated after cops tried to serve attempted murder arrest warrant

ORLANDO, Fla. - A standoff that lasted more than 10 hours ended when SWAT team members found an attempted murder suspect hiding in the ceiling of an east Orange County home, said Sheriff Jerry Demings.

The suspect, James Stewart, 29, was wanted in connection to an attempted murder earlier in the week, said the sheriff.

Deputies arrived at the home on Aden Court to serve the warrant shortly after noon Friday. Upon arrival, Stewart saw officers and barricaded himself inside the home.

Three other adults were let free; the husband and wife who own the home, and Stewart's girlfriend.

Those witnesses told deputies Stewart was armed, setting off the standoff that displaced 23 homeowners all evening.

"It may be unfair to characterize what they said to me as they were being held hostage," said Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings. "But what they said to me was they were fearful because of his demeanor and they were introduced to him through a third party and they were simply afraid of him."

Stewart may face additional charges, said Demings.
