PALM COAST, Fla. - A 16-year-old Flagler County student was arrested Monday on suspicion of raping a 14-year-old girl inside a school.

The girl told deputies that around 9:45 a.m. Monday she and the boy each requested hall passes and met under a staircase inside Matanzas High School, according to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.

She said they were kissing in the school stairwell when the boy forced her to perform a sex act on him, according to deputies.  The victim told deputies he then forced her to have sex with him.

Detectives interviewed the boy, who denied having sex with the girl but admitted to meeting her in the stairwell.

Text messages between the teens shortly after the incident led detectives to file charges.

The boy was arrested at 5 p.m. after questioning at the Sheriff's Office's Investigative Services Division. He was booked into the Flagler County Inmate Facility and then transferred to the Youth Services Division in Daytona Beach. He was additionally charged with violation of probation.

Less than 10 minutes passed in the time the students were unaccounted for.

The school superintendent says Matanzas High School recently installed 50 surveillance cameras in the school, but none were placed under the staircase. School officials said they're reviewing security procedures and may put cameras under the stairs.
