APOPKA, Fla. - A 19-year-old Central Florida woman was arrested Monday night on charges of leaving the scene of a fatal crash after she struck a teen boy on a bicycle, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Kristy Nandoo, of Apopka, was arrested after the crash, which occurred around 8:20 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 436 and Thompson Road in Orange County.
The FHP identified the teen killed in the crash as 16-year-old Edward Fernandez, of Apopka.
According to troopers, Fernandez was crossing S.R. 436, but wasn't in a crosswalk or at an intersection, when he was hit by a 2000 Mustang driven by Nandoo. Troopers also said it appeared Fernandez didn't have any lights on his bicycle.
The crash left the boy's mangled bicycle lying on S.R. 436, along with a shoe and some headphones.
Several other drivers who witnessed the crash called 911, and paramedics rushed the teen to Florida Hospital Apopka where doctors pronounced him dead.
Troopers said Nandoo switched vehicles with her 17-year-old boyfriend and they fled the scene, but the Mustang and his Ford pickup were stopped a short time later, and Nandoo was arrested.
FHP Sgt. Kim Montes says Nandoo likely wouldn't have faced charges had she stayed at the scene. Montes says it appears the bicyclist caused the accident.
Nandoo was not impaired, she wasn't driving recklessly and she had a valid driver's license, which she got two weeks ago, according to Montes, who added that Nandoo told troopers she was scared and confused and didn't know what to do after the accident.
The crash remains under investigation, including how fast Nandoo was driving.
At Apopka High School, where Fernandez was a ninth grader, grief counselors are on standby for students.
Principal Doug Guthrie sent Local 6 this statement, "Apopka High School lost a 9-grade student Edward Fernandez last night. Our deepest condolences go out to Edward's family and friends. We have counselors on standby for students who wish to express their grief and/or talk about Edward."
