Thieves use SUV to break into DeLand store

Smash and grab caught on camera

DeLAND, Fla. – Two thieves were caught on camera using their SUV to break into Hontoon Convenience Store around 5 a.m. Wednesday, before the store was open.

The men are first seen driving into the parking lot. They then crash the back end of their vehicle into the entrance. After that, they go inside and steal two lottery ticket cases and some cigarettes before taking off, officials said.

The owner, who goes by the nickname Dale, said he reported the theft to Florida Lottery, so if the suspects try to turn in any winning tickets, they'll immediately get denied.

"He is running a legitimate business and it's a shame that you got a couple of knuckleheads, bad seeds around here you know," said Ricky Rivera.

Riera, like a lot of other customers, says he's trying to help Dale out by doing a little extra shopping there. He said it's the lease they can do for such a nice guy.

Dale said he appreciates all the support, and hopes deputies find the thieves responsible.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
