Suspect allegedly apologized after incident

Daniel Melendez, 21, is accused of causing a physical disturbance at Universal CityWalk.

ORLANDO, Fla. – A Kissimmee man visiting Universal CityWalk punched and tackled an Orlando police officer while hurling insults Sunday evening, according to the Orlando Police Department.

Universal security team members called an officer to the area around 6:20 p.m. to help control two men who were being "uncooperative and physically aggressive with other patrons of Universal Studios," the arrest affidavit said.

Daniel Melendez, 21, refused to follow the officer's commands to get off the property, instead he walked toward the boat docks and shouted, "I'm going to get my girl," at the officer, police said.

Melendez approached a woman who security was attempting to escort off the property. Police said he stood in an aggressive manner and balled up his fist as if he were going to hit her.

Fearing Melendez would hit the woman, the officer grabbed Melendez by the arm to separate the couple. Melendez shouted at the officer, "Get the (expletive) off me, don't touch me you (expletive) pig," the report said.

Police said Melendez punched the officer in his face, grabbed him and tackled him into a bush. Melendez also repeatedly struck and push a Universal security team member who was trying to get Melendez off the officer, according to the affidavit.

During the struggle, Melendez shouted obscenities at patrons who had gathered to watch, police said.

After Melendez was arrested, he reportedly apologized for his actions.

"I am sorry man, I have never fought a cop. I was just super (mad) at those guys and the security guards," Melendez said, according to the report.

Melendez was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, battery on a uniformed security officer and disorderly conduct.
