Video shows man pepper-spraying clerk in Ocala gas station robbery

Police say robber hit clerk, ripped out cash register

OCALA, Fla. - A man who was caught on video pepper-spraying and beating up an Ocala gas station clerk to rob the store has been arrested.

Police said the culprit walked into the Kangaroo store on West Silver Springs Boulevard at 3 a.m. The man warmed up two hamburgers in the microwave then went to the counter to be checked out.

When he asked for a pack of cigarettes, police said he pepper-sprayed the 59-year-old clerk and ran behind the counter to hit the clerk over the head with an object before ripping out the cash register.

Just before leaving the store, the culprit goes to a cooler and grabs a Mountain Dew, police said.

The clerk received several staples for the cut on her head.

The clerk told police that the suspect could have been a woman or a man. Investigators later determined that a man who goes by the name of "D," later identified as AJ Irving, committed the crime.

Police were able to make contact with Irving, who agreed to accompany officers to the Ocala Police Department to talk. Irving later told police he planned the robbery with another man, who drove him to the area of the store.

Irving said he gave the money he stole to the other man who had driven him.

Irving was placed under arrest for the crime of robbery with a deadly weapon, and was taken to the Marion County Jail.
