Volusia County jail sergeant accused of having sexual encounter with inmate

Incident happened in jail laundry room, deputies say

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Volusia County Division of Corrections sergeant is accused of having a sexual encounter with a female inmate to whom he promised to bring drugs, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Christopher Harvey, 31, was supervising inmates on laundry duty around 1 a.m. on Oct. 28 when one of the inmates began flirting with him and making comments about his body. It was the first time Harvey and that inmate had met, the affidavit said.

During their banter, Harvey asked the woman if she wanted to bring any "stuff" into the jail for her and the inmate said she is a drug addict who would be willing to have sex with him if he brought her drugs, according to the report.

Authorities said Harvey led the woman to an area that was not within the view of security cameras and she performed oral sex on him for about five minutes until they heard the sound of another officer's keys jingling.

Another inmate witnessed the encounter and said that Harvey also flirted with her and wanted her to participate, but she did not want to, according to the affidavit. That inmate reported the incident to another corrections officer because Harvey wanted her to do laundry detail the next night and she did not want to, the report said.

The Sheriff’s Office Major Case Unit investigated the claim at the request of Volusia County Corrections’ Internal Affairs Division. Deputies said the incident happened at the Volusia County Correctional Facility at 1354 Indian Lake Road in Daytona Beach.

Harvey was unwilling to speak with detectives on Oct. 30 when they approached him about the incident, records show. He turned himself in Tuesday on a charge of sexual misconduct with an inmate. Deputies said he's being held at the Flagler County Jail on $5,000 bond.
