Volusia County man charged with DUI after driving into ditch

Man took nephews on ride in his sister's vehicle without her permission, cops say

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A 20-year-old Daytona Beach man was charged with driving under the influence on Sunday afternoon after Volusia County deputies say he drove his vehicle into a ditch with two children inside.

Leon Lovelady, 20, has been charged with grand theft, driving without a license, driving under the influence and committing an act that could result in injury of a child.

Deputies said Lovelady was helped out of the SUV after the crash by a deputy and smelled strongly of alcohol. Deputies said he told them he woke up his sister's children to take them for a ride in her vehicle without permission.

Lovelady said he had a couple of shots of gin just prior to the crash and that he had no driver's license. He couldn't complete several sobriety tests.

The children's mother and Lovelady's sister told deputies she wanted to prosecute her brother for child neglect and auto theft.
