Woman bludgeoned in rape attempt at Kissimmee motel

Suspect Ralph Lee Segar Jr., 36, taken into custody, interviewed by detectives

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - A man who police say brutally beat a woman outside a Kissimmee motel early Thursday morning has been taken into custody.

The victim -- whose name was not released -- was listed in stable condition after she was airlifted to a local hospital.

Investigators said 36-year-old Ralph Lee Segar Jr. tried to sexually assault the victim at the Ambassador Motel on Vine Street around 4:30 a.m.  He then bludgeoned her, police said.

She somehow made it to the pay telephone at the gas station next door, where she dialed 911 and wasn't able to say anything.  Police say that's how they were alerted that something was wrong, and they found her lying in a pool of blood.

"She was fine yesterday," Ambassador Motel front desk clerk Ana Acevedo said. "It was shocking when I woke up this morning, and I came out, and I see the yellow tape and everything.  I'm like, 'Oh, my God.  What happened?'"

Sajid Khan, who was working at the gas station next door, said there were bloodied hand prints on the lobby's front door.

"Maybe she slammed her hands on the window trying to get help, but the lobby was closed," he said.

An arrest warrant showed Kissimmee police were pursuing charges of attempted murder and attempted sexual battery for Segar, who has a criminal history that includes drug possession and beating up a pregnant woman in 1997, for which he served prison time.

Kissimmee police said the woman had been staying at the hotel for the last few days and met Segar, who was also a hotel guest.

Authorities said Thursday evening, Segar was arrested and taken into custody. He was being interviewed by Kissimmee Police detectives.

An investigation is ongoing.
