Woman, girl bitten by sharks off New Smyrna Beach

Both victims suffered minor injuries, officials say

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - An 8-year-old Deltona girl and a 58-year-old woman were bitten by sharks in separate attacks off New Smyrna Beach, officials said.

The attacks occurred Sunday about 300 yards south of the the New Smyrna Beach Jetty.

Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman Scott Petersohn said the woman was bitten early Sunday afternoon in about 3 feet of water and suffered a small puncture wound to her left ankle.  She drove herself to a hospital.

The girl was bitten a couple hours later while she was boogie-boarding in shallow water. She suffered minor puncture wounds to her calf and hand. Her parents took her to a hospital.

There have been six shark attacks off Volusia County this year, but all the injuries have been minor.
