Woman shot in stomach during Orlando home invasion

Orange County deputies search for gunman

ORLANDO, Fla. - Orange County sheriff's deputies on Wednesday continue to search for a gunman after a 19-year-old woman was shot inside her home.

The home invasion happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday at 1707 Pointe Ridge Court in Orlando.

Deputies said the woman heard a knock at her door, but she didn't open the door.

A man then kicked in her door and shot her in her abdomen, deputies said.

The woman went to a neighbor's house and called 911.

"From what we know right now, she's only lived here for two weeks and states that she knows nobody in the area, so we need to figure out why this person targeted her," Orange County sheriff's Lt. Paul Hopkins said.

The victim's mother, identified only as Ava, told Local 6 that her daughter was doing OK.

"She is in stable condition and just got out of surgery, so thank God for that," Ava said.

Just before the shooting, the victim's younger siblings were inside the home.

"I just picked up my kids like at 9:15 or something," Ava said.  "I just took them out of the door when that happened, so the (assailant) could have did that while my kids were there."

Deputies are not sure of a motive.

"It couldn't have been anyone robbing her. She had just moved here.  Who knew she was here? All her money is still left in the purse, there's no way," said Ava.

The victim turns 20 years old on Thursday, Ava said.

An investigation is ongoing.
