Pet store puppies spreading antibiotic-resistant bacteria in Florida

ATLANTA – An infection that is resistant to antibiotics and spread by puppies bought at a pet store chain has made its presence felt in Florida

The CDC reports that the spread of Campylobacter, a bacteria that causes diarrhea, cramping, fever and abdominal pain, has been linked to puppies purchased at Petland.

The outbreak has affected 55 people nationwide, including 12 in Florida where Petland operates several locations, including three in South Florida.

Only Ohio (22) has reported more cases of Campylobacter than Florida. The most recent illness was confirmed on Sept. 12.

Many of the cases have been unable to be treated by antibiotics, leaving patients to recover on their own.

Those made sick from the infection range from a child under one year of age, to an 86-year-old.

13 people have been hospitalized from the infection, but no deaths have been reported.

Petland is cooperating with the CDC while the investigation continues.
