ORLANDO, Fla. - Left turns, people, left turns.
When 1 out of every 5 emails talks about drivers improperly making left turns, I think we need to chat.
Specifically, I’m talking about multiple left-turn lanes.
All too often, right here in the heart of Florida, which happens to be under complete reconstruction, minor vehicle movements are resulting in some pretty serious crashes.
I get it. After every movement, we are getting ready to make another. Drivers think their travel plans are the most important thing in the world. But you have to remember that every driver has a travel plan and thinks it's just as important.
When approaching a double left-turn lane, whether choosing the left lane or the right lane, the same rules apply.
Maintaining your lane during the entrance and exit of the left turn is crucial to not having a collision with another vehicle.
When you enter the left lane and you’re in the intersection, maintain the course of the left turn so that you can enter the left travel lane. This is not a time to try to go all the way to the right-hand side of the road. Not only is it dangerous, but the other cars to your right are still there.
The same thing applies if you are in the right lane. Maintain the course of the travel, do not change lanes and negotiate your turn to where it wants you to go.
For both lanes, once you complete the turns, you can then take other actions.
Violations of the left-hand turns statute could result in multiple different actions, including a ticket and, worst, a crash.
