You don't have to go to the Atlantic or Gulf Coast to enjoy a scenic waterside trip, especially considering Central Florida offers a hot spot that's just as much fun.

Wekiva Island, located right in Longwood, packs a Tiki-style island getaway right on the Wekiva River and next to a state park. You can take a kayak over the still morning water and splash around by the shore in the afternoon.

Fun and beauty in and out of the water

Wekiva Island is the ideal spot for locals and visitors alike.

If you're the type who wants to splash around, the island offers canoes, kayaks and paddle boards available for rent to cruise over the water's glassy surface. Or you can bring your own boat -- up to 25-horsepower engine -- with just a launch fee.

Alternatively, you can escape the heat by going for a swim. Get this: The Wekiva River water stays a comfortable 72 degrees all year round.

Or get your game on by reserving the regulation-sized volleyball court right behind The Tooting Otter (more on The Tooting Otter soon!). Feel the sand between your toes as you pound the court in a competitive or leisurely game.

The Kings Landing river trip is a scenic trip downstream that meanders along 8 miles of beautiful flora and peaceful waters. Without stopping, it's about four hours to go down the river, but you can take advantage of several points on the journey to swim, fish or just snack and relax.

Are you still thinking you need something adventurous that piques your interest?

Wekiwa Springs State Park offers 13 miles of trails for hiking, biking or riding horseback through the tropical splendor. Since it's right at the headwaters of the Wekiva River, you can take your kayak or canoe for a floating adventure, then stop by The Tooting Otter for a drink and Without a Paddle Cafe for a bite. Camping sites are available in the park for an overnight stay, from full facilities to basic grounds where it's just you and nature.

Enjoy riverfront amenities and relaxation

While you're on Wekiva Island, you can enjoy a bunch of amenities.

  • The Tooting Otter is that spot we mentioned earlier, and it offers craft beer and wine to thirsty visitors right by the Wekiva River. On Friday and Saturday nights, you can knock back a frosty glass to live music. Be sure to walk through the General Store for summer clothing, jewelry, candles, reefs and other fun items. If you rented a cabana, you can take your drink by the water and let your mind drift with the current.
  • Without a Paddle Cafe has a variety of menu items to satisfy your hunger, including delectable vegetarian options. There's something on the menu for every stomach.
  • Rent a river cabana so you and your friends can relax and watch the water. You're guaranteed two parking spaces, and there are cabinets and chests available to hold your food and drinks. You can get drinks right on the island. Book early to pick the size and style of cabana that suits you. Pro tip: For cabana get-togethers, or any special events at the island really, let Without a Paddle cater the feast -- easy-peasy.
  • The Sanctuary is a marina escape right on the river, where you can stow your boat and enjoy a more secluded relaxation spot. There are 22 covered slips for boats, and you can even secure one for monthly rental.
  • Cruise the boardwalk right along the Wekiva River and Sweetwater Canal, complete with Adirondack chairs lining the water. The boat launch lets you get your boat into the water. It's perfect for the cooler Florida months, with a fire pit at the riverfront where you can cozy up to the flames.
  • Energy-efficient and resource-conservative restrooms live up to the theme of an eco-friendly island. These clean indoor facilities feature waterless urinals and low-flow/dual-flush toilets.
