WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. – Dozens of community members came out to watch the first pitch at the Space Coast Field of Dreams Tuesday morning.
Governor Rick Scott was at bat with one of the first athletes on the field, Brittany Klenotich. Robin Fisher, the Brevard County Commissioner of District 1, said this is the first step to helping form new leagues for kids with special needs.
"We've done a good job of getting them in the stands, but we haven't done a good job of getting them in the field, and this, today, is about getting them on the field," said Fisher.
A grand opening ceremony will be held Tuesday morning for the Space Coast Field of Dreams special-needs sports complex.
The complex at West Melbourne Community Park on Minton Road cost about $5.5 million, said Field of Dreams treasurer Milo Zonka.
In November, a small army of volunteers worked more than 1,400 shifts constructing a 13,000-square-foot playground during a five-day "Community Build."
