Americans compete in men's 50-meter freestyle

Ervin takes gold, Adrian takes bronze

American swimmer Anthony Ervin won gold in the 50-meter freestyle final at the Rio Olympics on Friday night.

Florent Manaudou of France took silver and America's Nathan Adrian took bronze.

The medal was Adrian's third in Rio. He also won bronze in Wednesday's 100-meter freestyle and was part of Sunday's gold medal-winning 4x100m freestyle relay team.

The 27-year-old Washington native and Cal alum also won two golds and a silver at the 2012 London Games and another gold at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Adrian will also be part of the U.S. relay team for the 4x100m medley final on Saturday. Four other members of the team qualified the U.S. for final in the event by finishing second overall in Friday's preliminary heats.

Ervin, the 2000 Olympic gold medalist in the 50m free, is competing in his third Olympics.

The 35-year-old Californian won gold earlier in Rio as part of the U.S. team swimming in the 4x100m freestyle prelims to go along with the silver he won in that same event in the 2000 Sydney Games.
