Finishing second was three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw. The Dodger left-hander received three first-place votes, 25 second-place votes and one vote each for third and fourth place, which gave him 126 points.

Scherzer's Nationals teammate Stephen Strasburg was third with a total of 81 points.

Scherzer, 33, posted a 16-6 record this past season to go with a 2.51 ERA. He also led the National League in strikeouts (268), WHIP (0.90) and WAR (7.3).

This past season marked his second straight as the NL's strikeout leader and he's also been an All-Star for five straight seasons.

Besides his 2016 Cy Young Award, Scherzer also won the 2013 award while pitching for the Detroit Tigers.

In his third season with the Nationals, he helped the team to a 97-65 record, good enough to top the NL East for the second straight year.

The Nationals lost the NLDS to the Chicago Cubs in five games.
