ORLANDO, Fla. – When the brand-new Alliance of American Football launches in February, quarterback Garrett Gilbert will be steering the Orlando Apollos' ship.
The Apollos selected the 27-year-old former Southern Methodist University Mustang on Tuesday in the first round of the Alliance's quarterback draft.
An NFL sixth round draft pick in 2014, Gilbert brings years of experience as a practice squad player.
Now, the 6-foot-4 signal-caller is looking forward to making a more significant impact on the Apollos, working alongside head coach Steve Spurrier in football's new league of opportunity.
Gilbert stopped by News 6 to talk with sports director Jamie Seh. Watch the interview above.
