Countdowns & Closures

A lot of little updates today.  A few closures to report -- but we start with the countdowns.

As the busy Memorial Day Weekend draws nearer, SeaWorld is about to open the ambitious Antarctica: Empire of the Penguins. And they have released a few publicity photos of the land and ride including a look inside the trackless ride.

The land and ride are already home to around 250 penguins. SeaWorld tells us they are really enjoying their cool new digs.
Our Morning Team is set to get a close look at the new land this week. We are working on a 30 minute special on the opening of Antarctica.

The area opens May 24th.
Universal, of course, is also counting down to the June 20th opening of Transformers: The Ride-3D -- and I understand training is well underway.
The final countdown today -- FunSpot America on I-Drive.  For months we've told you the park plans to double in size by its 15th anniversary celebration on June 8, 2013.
I understand testing is underway now on the new family-friendly suspended coaster, Freedom Flyer, made by Vekoma.

Look for it to open to guests sooner than later. We will keep you posted.

Now for the closures.

First -- in an unusual move, Disney has closed Typhoon Lagoon for a week. Sources confirm work needs to be done on the floor of the park's signature wave pool and they wanted it finished before Memorial Day crowds.

Typhoon should be back open on May 17th.  Disney's lifeguards have been temporarily reassigned and guests are being redirected to Blizzard Beach,

In the Magic Kingdom -- we take you to a quick closure on one of my favorite spots

I'll be showcasing Tom Sawyer Island very soon. But a quick note -- several people have asked me about the "escape tunnel" in the fort. It has been closed off for a few weeks now.

Not to worry -- sources tell me there was some damage to the stairs in that part of the attraction.
Don't believe some internet reports the tunnel was permanently closed due to lawyers declaring it unsafe. It's not true. Repair work is underway. If it has not already reopened -- the tunnel should be back in operation soon.

One final quick closure - Downtown Disney's Cirque du Soleil La Nouba is dark until May 28.

Work is being done on the theater -- and the cast is also training new members.

That's it for today -- it should be a busy week in Theme World. Keep your emails, questions, and comments coming!

See you in the parks.
