TAMPA, Fla. – Los Angeles was supposed to host Super Bowl LV, but a year-delay in the stadium construction for the Rams and Chargers gave the city of Tampa a gift, according to NFL officials.

NFL officials announced Tuesday that Tampa will host Super Bowl LV in 2021 at Raymond James Stadium, home of the Buccaneers. L.A. will now host Super Bowl LVI in 2022.

The relocation came after an unanimous vote by league owners on Tuesday afternoon. Unusual wet weather in the Los Angeles area caused the delay in stadium construction.

This will be Tampa's first Super Bowl since 2009. The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 thanks to a last-minute touchdown.

Last year, the NFL told L.A. that despite the league requiring a stadium to be open for two seasons before it can host a Super Bowl, they could host if a waiver was obtained. Instead, the game was moved to Tampa.

"Our focus in this process is this building should host multiple Super Bowls over many generations, and we need to make sure we deliver a building that is an exceptional, Super Bowl-quality building," Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff said last week. "Our focus is more on the caliber of building than the exact year of the Super Bowl."
