Kyler Tate battles for individual national title

Tate to play on Monday after tying for fourth at Rich Harvest Farms

SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – As the UCF men's golf team battles in the final round of the NCAA Division 1 championship on Monday, sophomore Kyler Tate drives for a national title, sitting minus-8 and tied for fourth after three rounds at Rich Harvest Farms.

Tate, who has been hitting well the past couple of rounds, collecting a minus-3 on Sunday in the third and a minus-6 in his second round, will look to continue his efforts today starting at 11:30 a.m. CT.

Despite his success, including a run of five straight birdies to move himself up through the ranks, Tate still has found room to improve, saying all of his shots need to be executed carefully.

"(On 15), I hit a perfect drive and I duff my eight iron and make bogey," Tate said in a story on UCFKnights.com. "The next hole is a pretty tough Par 3 and I stuck it and made birdie. From there, they just seemed to kind of fall. They just all went in. After that, I grinded it out. I made some really good pars coming in."

It was his grind-it-out mentality that allowed him to help the Knights move on to the next round of play, parring on hole No. 18 to help UCF make the cut and move onto the final day of the Division 1 championship.

"It is a great opportunity to win a tournament like this," Tate said in a UCFKnights.com story. "But I don't think you can look at the future like that. You have to play one shot, one hole at a time and see where you stack up at the end of the day. If you go out and say you are going to win it, I don't think that really helps your chances."

Tied for fourth, Tate sits behind Texas golfer Scottie Scheffler (minus-12), Vanderbilt's Matthias Schwab (minus-9) and Illinois' Dylan Meyer (minus 9).
