Osceola Co. teacher vies for 'Teacher of the Year' award

Nanci Brillant named one of five nominees

ORLANDO, Fla. – St. Cloud High School teacher Nanci Brillant is one of five finalists vying for the 2013 "Florida Teacher of the Year" award on Thursday in Orlando.

Mrs. Brillant was named a finalist in May. She teaches reading at the Osceola County high school.

When she was chosen as a finalist, Mrs. Brillant was given a $5,000 check and a $500 Macy's gift card. Macy's is the main sponsor for the annual award.

Saint Cloud High School also received a $1,000 check when Mrs. Brillant was nominated.

If she wins the "Florida Teacher of the Year" award, Mrs. Brillant will receive a $10,000 grant and an all-expense paid trip for four to New York City to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Mrs. Brillant would also serve as the Christa McAuliffe Ambassador for education. As the ambassador, Mrs. Brillant would tour the state to talk about educational opportunities and challenges in Florida.

The 2013 winner will be chosen during a ceremony at Hard Rock Live at Universal Studios CityWalk at 10 a.m.
