LEADING OFF: Time for September call-ups, but not too many
(AP Photo/Jason Redmond) (Jason Redmond)A look at what's happening around the majors on Wednesday:___CALL 'EM UPMajor League Baseball teams can now expand their rosters, but there's something different about September call-ups this season — clubs can add just two players. Even before COVID-19 altered and shortened the 2020 season to only 60 games, MLB had decided to reduce the September call-ups while adding a 26th player to the roster fulltime last year. The 29-year-old DeShields was with Boston’s Triple-A team in Worcester and assigned to the Reds’ top minor league team in Louisville. DeShields has six years of big league experience. He’s 43-31 with 126 saves and a 3.70 ERA over 11 big league seasons.wftv.com

Until the ninth, the Indians did little against Pittsburgh starter Mitch Keller and three relievers. UP NEXTAaron Civale (4-5), who will pitch in relief for the Indians during the wild-card round, makes his final regular-season start against Pirates right-hander Joe Musgrove (0-5).

At Citi Field, Mets two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom ran sprints by himself in shallow right field, then grabbed his personal bag of baseballs to throw off a bullpen mound. Major League Baseball said the All-Star Game, scheduled for July 14 at Dodger Stadium, has been canceled. You have to come down to the field one way and back off the field another way, Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer said. When Rougned Odor pulled a home run into the right field seats in an intrasquad game, there was a smattering of applause. Im kind of expecting weird, expecting things to be different, manager Chris Woodward said later.
