Health Canada said it has not received any reports of blood clots in Canada, and the departmentโs chief medical adviser, Dr. Supriya Sharma, said she still believes the vaccineโs benefits outweigh the risks. Last week, the department changed its label on the vaccine to warn about the rare risk of blood clots. Canada is expected to receive 1.5 million doses of AstraZeneca from the U.S. on Wednesday. Canada has placed bigger bets on Pfizer and Moderna, ordering up to 76 million doses of Pfizer and up to 44 million of Moderna, compared with up to 20 million of AstraZeneca.

Trudeau said officials have been assured by the European Union that Pfizer and Moderna vaccine deliveries to Canada won't be disrupted. Raptors-Pistons postponed, tentatively set for Wednesday

The Raptors were scheduled to play Chicago on Sunday and that game was postponed indefinitely because of positive tests and contact tracing issues. The league cautioned that Wednesday is a tentative rescheduling date for the game against the Pistons, and is โpending additional test results." Tuesday's game becomes the 31st postponed this season because at least one team was unable to play in accordance with the league's health and safety policies related to the coronavirus pandemic. The Raptors have been without coach Nick Nurse and five other staff members since late last week because of virus-related issues.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced Thursday cruise vessels carrying 100 or more people will remain prohibited from operating in Canadian waters. Vessels carrying more than 12 people will also stay prohibited from entering Arctic coastal waters. The temporary measures were scheduled to end on February 28, 2021. Those who do not comply are subject to fines.

Indiaโs total positive cases since the start of the epidemic have reached 10.6 million, the second highest after the United States with 25.43 million cases. India started inoculating health workers on Jan. 16 in what is likely the worldโs largest COVID-19 vaccination campaign. The FDA said Tuesday there have been reports of hospitalizations and death linked to the sanitizers reported to U.S. poison control centers and state health departments. The stateโs health agency on Tuesday said third-party administrators would take over ordering and distributing vaccine doses with a new state secretary in charge of logistics. On Tuesday, the CDC reported just over half of the 41 million doses distributed to states have been put in peopleโs arms.

TORONTO, ONT โ Construction on the long disputed Keystone XL oil pipeline halted Wednesday as incoming U.S. President Joe Biden revoked its permit on his first day in office. โLeaving the Keystone XL pipeline permit in place would not be consistent with my Administrationโs economic and climate imperatives.โKeystone XL President Richard Prior said over 1,000 jobs, the majority unionized, will be eliminated in the coming weeks. โWe are disappointed but acknowledge the Presidentโs decision to fulfil his election campaign promise on Keystone XL,โ Trudeau said in a statement. Trudeau raised Keystone XL as a top priority when he spoke with Biden in a phone call in November. โKilling the Keystone XL pipeline once and for all is a clear indication that climate action is a priority for the White House,โ said Dale Marshall, national climate program manager for Canadaโs Environmental Defence.
Canada getting 168K Moderna vaccine doses before year end
TORONTO, ONT โ Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday that Canada has contracted to receive up to 168,000 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine before the end of December, pending approval by the countryโs health regulator. Trudeau said deliveries could begin within 48 hours of regulatory approval and health officials said they expect to approve use of the Moderna vaccine soon. Canadians began receiving vaccine shots developed by Pfizer and BioNTech on Monday and Trudeau said Canada expects to receive about 200,000 doses from Pfizer next week. The Moderna vaccine was more than 94% effective overall at preventing COVID-19 illness, and 86% effective in people 65 and older. Trudeau noted the Moderna vaccine does not need some of the extra special handling requirements of the one from Pfizer, including ultra cold freezers.

TORONTO, ONT โ Canada administered its first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, becoming one of the first countries to do so in the effort to beat back the pandemic. Five front-line workers in Ontario were among the first Canadians to receive the vaccine at one of Torontoโs hospitals. Canada has ordered more doses than needed for Canadians, 10 doses per Canadian according to the government. Ontario reported 1,940 new cases of COVID-19 Monday, and 23 new deaths while Quebec announced 1,620 new cases of COVID-19 and 25 more deaths. Derek Thompson, another personal support worker who received the vaccine in Toronto, said it felt just like getting a flu shot.
