1 dead after car hydroplanes, slams into tree

Victim identified as Alex Santiago, 24, of Palm Bay

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – ​One person was killed in a crash on State Road 528 in Orange County on Tuesday afternoon.

The crash was reported on SR 528 just after 1:30 p.m. at mile marker 34, between the State Road 520 exit and Interstate 95.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Annete Soto Diaz, 22, was driving a 2012 BMW west on SR 528 in heavy rain when her car began to hydroplane, causing her to lose control.

Troopers said the BMW left the roadway and the front of the vehicle struck a tree.

One passenger, Alex Santiago, 24, of Palm Bay, died of injuries suffered in the crash. A second passenger, Vassell Wear, 26, suffered serious injuries.

The FHP said immediately following that crash, a second, separate crash took place in the same area. The driver was not injured in the second crash.

No other details were immediately available.
