16-year-old killed in crash on US 1 in Brevard

FHP identifies victim as Kentral Lamont Welch

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. – A 16-year-old boy was killed in a crash with a semitruck Wednesday night in Brevard County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The FHP said Kentral Lamont Welch, of Cocoa, died in the wreck, which was reported around 10 p.m. on U.S. 1 near Friendship Place in Rockledge.

According to troopers, Welch was the passenger in a Ford Fusion driven by a 16-year-old Rockledge boy.

The Fusion and the truck were southbound on U.S. 1 when the driver of the semi changed lanes, troopers said. The driver of the Fusion tried to avoid the semi and entered a construction area when the vehicle hit the rear of the truck, the FHP said.

Welch was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. 

The driver of the Fusion suffered minor injuries. The driver of the semi, a 23-year-old Kissimmee man, was not hurt.

Charges are pending in the fatal crash, according to an FHP report.

No other details have been released.
