Driver crashes into retention pond, swims to shore, walks to hotel

Lake Mary police investigate crash

LAKE MARY, Fla. – A pickup truck crashed into a retention pond early Tuesday in Lake Mary, prompting divers to search for the driver, who was found safe in his hotel room, authorities said.

The crash happened off Lake Emma Road, south of Lake Mary Boulevard.

According to Lake Mary police, the driver was traveling south at a high rate of speed on Lake Emma Road when he lost control of his vehicle and drove into the retention pond. It's believed the driver was headed to a nearby hotel, officials said.

Police and divers searched the pond for the driver but the driver was not found, police said. A receipt was located, prompting authorities to call local hotels, and the driver was tracked down to a local hotel, police said.

The man was found safe in his hotel room, police said. He said he left the scene because he was scared, according to police.

It's not known if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

The truck was towed from the water and police said guns were found inside the vehicle. It's not known if the guns were owned legally.

No other details have been released.
