Man hit by van dies at hospital

Witnesses say driver ran red light


COCOA, Fla. – A man is in the hospital in critical condition after being struck by a van while he was crossing the street.

The Cocoa Police Department said Nathan WilliamVandegrift, 31, was crossing U.S. 1 at Peachtree Street in Cocoa just after 8 a.m. Saturday.

While in the crosswalk, he was struck by a van traveling south on U.S. 1, police said.

Multiple witnesses said the commercial van ran a red light and hit Vandegrift crossing the street. 

Vandegrift died from his injuries at 4:02 p.m. Saturday.

The driver of the van remained and spoke with investigators. 

The name of the driver has not been released. 

The investigation is ongoing with charges pending.
