Overnight closures scheduled over weekend on I-4 at 408

Late night and early morning drivers who take Interstate 4 into downtown Orlando will need to plan ahead. The latest wave of Big Drive work will bring closures to I-4 eastbound.

The first round of closures will go into effect Friday.

“Starting Friday night at 10 o’clock until Saturday morning at 5 a.m. and then again Saturday night and again Sunday night into Monday morning, closing eastbound I-4 underneath the 408 so we can do some demolition on the bridges over the top of I-4," said David Parks, Public Information Officer of the I-4 Ultimate Project.

The recommended detour starts at the South Street exit.

“So drivers that are heading eastbound on I-4 will need to exit at South Street to continue North on Garland and then re-enter Eastbound I-4 from State Road 50," Parks said.

This type of closure is nothing new to I-4 work crews. There will be police and detour signs helping nightly traffic around the closure.

“The Department of Transportation has experience with this in the past but obviously there are a lot of drivers who are new to the area and we want to make sure that we let then know that they can still get to where they need to go but they’ll maybe want to plan a few extra minutes as they get through that area during the overnight hours," Parks said.

Major closures are a necessary part of the I-4 Ultimate plan and overnight is the best time possible, especially downtown. That portion of I-4 sees upwards of 200,000 cars using that interchange every day.

The reason behind this weekend's closures is predemolition work before the bridge can eventually be widened.
