The Florida Department of Transportation said the gas line was hit by I-4 Ultimate construction crews. The crews were moved to safety after the gas rupture, and the road was closed for safety reasons.

I-4 was shut down between International Drive and Conroy Road, snarling traffic for miles as drivers got on State Road 528 as a detour.

TECO Energy was notified, fire officials said. FDOT said the contractor will investigate.

Shoppers at the outlet mall on International Drive were leaving because they say the smell was bad.

No other details were immediately available.
