BUNNELL, Fla. – The Flagler County Sheriff is looking to get results for his community and state officials are responding.
A crew with the Florida Department of Transportation has painted two distinct lanes on Old Dixie Highway at US 1 in Flagler, making them each turn-only lanes.
Driver Chris Sharon said a few days ago, he saw the crew painting the roadway.
"It shouldn't have taken five people's deaths to do that," Sharon said.
FHP said that five people were killed in early February after being hit by a pickup while attempting to turn southbound on US 1 from Old Dixie Highway.
The sheriff wrote a letter to FDOT the day after the deadly crash, suggesting a traffic light at the intersection. The sheriff wrote that there has been more than 200 accidents near the intersection in only the past three years.
"There hasn't been much change that I've seen. I've been in this area for 10 years, living around here, and it's just been, you know, hit and miss. Accidents do happen, but they do need to do something more with that intersection," Sharon said.
FDOT responded to the sheriff with another letter, which said they sent a crew to refurbish the stop line and repaint the lanes.
The most recent changes, which include warning signs for the intersection, appear to be the same suggestions made in a traffic study completed before Christmas.
FDOT said a traffic light and a roundabout are both possibilities as they look at their options moving forward.
